The purpose of the competition is as part of the FIVB's promotion strategy to enhance the attention of worldwide audience (especially in East Asia) to women's volleyball teams. Every year's summer, the preliminary matches of World Grand Prix are hosted in different countries (mainly in Asia) on a rotating basis. Twelve participating teams compete for the qualification of final round according to their results in preliminary rounds. After four weeks competition, the winner of the final round will be the champion of the competition in the year.
